Growing
worldwide demand for high quality protein, combined with expanding human
populations and decreasing wild stocks of fish, assures an increased future
dependence on aquaculture. Yet, many current aquaculture practices degrade
the environment and fuel conflicts among user groups for scarce coastal
resources.
OI's challenge is to develop profitable and
sustainable aquaculture ventures that support responsible resource stewardship.
The implementation of advanced technologies promises to allow aquaculture
to make significant contributions to future supplies of seafood while minimizing
adverse environmental effects. OI's focus is twofold: 1. Industry
Partnering and 2. Work Force Training
