What is Marine Science?

At OI, Marine Science (also sometimes called Environmental Science by our researchers) is studying the ocean and all the organisms that live there. We try to understand how fish live in the ocean and on the reefs and then apply that knowledge to our aquaculture work.

Aquaculture is essentially the breeding of marine plants and animals in captivity. The more we know about how these organisms live in the wild, the better we can do at raising healthy organisms on aqua farms.

Aquaculture is a component of marine science, since the better job we do at raising marine organisms in captivity, the less of an impact humans have on the natural marine environment. We can lessen the impact of fishing and harvesting, therefore giving future generations the privilege of enjoying our ocean's resources too.
