Internships and Volunteering at OIOceanic Institute accepts volunteers and/or interns in most of the research programs and, occasionally, in our administrative departments. Volunteer and internship positions are primarily intended to assist students with making education and/or professional career choices. Oceanic Institute is not an accredited educational institution and therefore is unable to confer degrees on students. However, OI is an affiliate of Hawaii Pacific University and conducts joint classes at its Waimanalo facility. Please visit their website at www.hpu.edu to learn more about their programs. At OI, interns typically work in one of our four main areas: shrimp, finfish, stock enhancement or nutrition. More information about these programs is available under the Research section of this site. Volunteer/intern positions are unpaid and each request is considered on a case-by-case basis. Volunteers/interns must be 16 years or older to participate. Prospective volunteers/interns are required to send a letter proposal indicating the following: 1) program preference (ranked multiple choices is recommended in case a particular program is not available),
2) time to be committed,
3) days of the week when you are available, and
4) duration proposed to volunteer at OI.
If applicable, please state whether you will be able to receive school credit for the internship at OI. Enclosing a resume is strongly encouraged. Proposals should be mailed, faxed, or e-mailed. Our mailing address is: Oceanic Institute, Attention: Human Resources Department, 41-202 Kalaniana'ole Highway, Waimanalo, Hawaii, USA 96795-1820. Our fax number is: (808) 259-5570. The Oceanic Institute is unable to provide financial assistance, scholarships, stipends or living allowances. All proposals must be approved by the program manager and management committee. An interview may be needed prior to making a final decision. In some cases the interview can be conducted over the phone. If approved, volunteers and interns are required to complete a Volunteer Waiver, Hold Harmless and Indemnity Agreement when they start and provide proof of medical coverage effective in Hawaii during the volunteer/internship period. In addition, health certificates with tuberculosis (TB) clearance may be required in advance of acceptance and an up-to-date certificate may be necessary upon arrival. |
